Health Insurance: What are your options?
If you want to secure healthcare facilities for yourself and your family members then you should opt for a health insurance policy. In fact, medical facilities are becoming so expensive day by day, that these days you cannot do without health insurance. If you hold a right kind of health insurance policy, then in case of any accident or health hazards, your medical bills are paid by the health insurance company. But, in order to choose the health insurance policy according to your requirement, first you should be aware of your available options.
Health Insurance Types
- Fee for service health insurance plans or indemnity policies- This is a traditional health insurance policy, which pays a part of your medical bills in return of your monthly insurance premiums. Under this policy, you can take medical facilities from a wide range hospitals and doctors. Insurance companies which offer this kind of health insurance plan are required to pay fees to the medical service providers. Therefore, these plans are called fee for service health insurance plans.
- HMO or Health Maintenance Organizations health insurance policy-This is a prepaid health insurance plan, which pays not only for your hospitals stays and surgeries but also for your x-rays and laboratory tests. If you buy this kind of health insurance policy then you can avail medical care from those hospitals which are affiliated with HMOs.
- POS or Point of Service health insurance plans- Under this kind of health insurance plan, you can get medical treatment from a service provider outside the network. If doctors within the network make referrals to the medical service providers outside the network, then the insurance plan can pay most of your medical bills.
- PPO or Preferred Provider Organizations health insurance policy- This type of health insurance is actually a combination of fee for service insurance plan and HMO health insurance policy. Just like the fee-for service insurance plans, PPO insurance providers are also required to pay fees to the medical service providers. On the other hand, just like HMO insurance plans, you can the avail medical facilities only from the preferred providers or the network providers.
